Thomas Porcelain: Old series

Join us on a design journey - from the old Thomas porcelain series to modern kitchen classics.

Thomas porcelain stands for functional, young tableware design. With a variety of popular porcelain series, the brand has established itself as a crockery classic in many households. Today, old Thomas porcelain series are not only nostalgic memories, but also pave the way for subsequent Thomas tableware collections.

From the expansion of the Thomas brand by Rosenthal in the 1950s to the Scandi design of the 1980s and the Vario design of the 1990s: find out more about the most famous series of past decades as pioneers for current Thomas products.

From the 50s to the 90s - an insight into the design history of the old Thomas ranges

Thomas' old series not only paved the way for the timelessly modern tableware collections of today, but also epitomise German porcelain history. Timeless classics such as the Thomas Trend series illustrate the various design trends over the decades in their development from the old series to the current Thomas Trend collection.

In order to meet changing needs, Thomas integrates contemporary, modern themes and materials into its product range with its old series from the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s through to current collections.

The 50s - The beginning of an era

The 1950s mark the start of Thomas Porcelain as an independent brand. Rosenthal takes over Thomas Porcelain together with its old series and expands the brand for young, design-orientated and uncomplicated everyday tableware that combines quality and functionality.

Typical mid-century features of the old Thomas series from the 1950s are clear lines, simple shapes and functional designs. The simple coffee services, which were characterised by their understated porcelain elegance, were particularly striking. Anyone who owns a set from this period today not only has a piece of history in their hands, but also a coveted collector's item.

With the new revival of mid-century interior design, the old Thomas ranges from the 1950s with their straightforward designs and typical patterns such as stripes are now more popular than ever and are absolutely on trend.

The 60s - colourful design and innovation

Simple functionality and colourful futurism - in the 1960s, Thomas increasingly focused on bold colours and innovative shapes. Thomas porcelain from the 1960s is characterised by colourful patterns and clear lines. Many of these old Thomas series are very popular with collectors today and achieve high values. For example, the old Thomas Medaillon Onyx series, with its clear, purist Thomas Medaillon design and striking geometric pattern of rectangles arranged in a grid pattern, reflects the dawn of a modern age and epitomises an era in which design was increasingly seen as an expression of individuality and joie de vivre.

The 70s - timeless retro charm

The 70s are characterised by a mix of retro designs and innovative materials. The old series from the 70s are characterised by simple, organic shapes and soft colours that perfectly capture the spirit of the 70s. At the same time, old Thomas ranges from the late 70s, such as the Scandic Shadow tableware range from Thomas, show the influence of Scandinavian design, which characterised the Thomas tableware style in the 80s in particular.

The 80s - functionality meets modern Scandinavian design

In the 1980s, Thomas porcelain focussed on functional and stylish tableware that was primarily characterised by Scandinavian design. Many of the old Thomas porcelain series from the 1980s are now cult favourites and coveted by tableware lovers worldwide. The popular Thomas Trend series, for example, was introduced in the 1980s and quickly developed into one of the most successful and long-lasting Thomas porcelain designs.

The well-known old Thomas Trend designs from the 1980s include Thomas Trend Surf, for example. While the original Trend White tableware collection became known for its simple white aesthetics and characteristic circular grooves, Thomas launched a modern and colour-accentuated version on the market in the 1980s with Trend Surf

The 90s - transition to the modern age

In the 1990s, the Scandinavian influence on the design of Thomas porcelain deepened. This period is characterised by a return to natural materials and shapes, which further emphasises the simple elegance and functionality of the tableware. To this day, Thomas has remained true to Scandinavian design and impresses with the popular Thomas Nature and Thomas Clay collections, whose clear, organic lines and earthy colours are an expression of this minimalist Scandinavian style.

Modern and always on trend

At the same time, the Thomas Sunny Day tableware design features a fresh design that combines lightness and functionality.

Discover Thomas Sunny Day colour designs

Many of the models from the 90s are not only coveted collector's items today, but are still very popular in everyday use. The colourful, cheerful Sunny Day collection, which is constantly being supplemented with new trend colours, is still one of the most popular tableware collections.

Thomas Trend also captures the spirit of the times with the old series of the 90s Thomas Trend Wafe in geometric shapes with a waffle-like relief. This gives the simple design an additional dimension that is both modern and functional and perfectly reflects the minimalist trends of the 1990s.

With the old Thomas Vario series, the Thomas brand set new trends in porcelain design in the 1990s with its innovative mix of round and angular shapes. This collection epitomises the desire of the 1990s to combine traditional tableware shapes with a modern, creative approach. The simple colour scheme is particularly striking, allowing the tableware to be used both in everyday life and for special occasions. The old Thomas series embodies the design philosophy of the 90s, in which aesthetics, versatility and functionality oscillate in an ideal way and continue to make Thomas Vario tableware a timeless classic.

The collector's value of old Thomas porcelain series

Old series of Thomas porcelain not only have an idealistic value, but often also a high material value, as they are no longer produced and therefore have limited availability. Particularly rare models from the 1950s to the 1990s fetch high prices at auctions and among collectors. The value always depends on the condition of the porcelain, availability and demand. Series such as Thomas Bavaria or Thomas Scandic are particularly sought-after and symbolise the high level of craftsmanship in porcelain production and the traditional history of Thomas Porcelain.

As an old series, Thomas Bavaria has a high collector's value, as the crockery series still comes from Marktredwitz, Bavaria, from the time when Fritz Thomas founded the brand in 1903. The Thomas brand quickly became known for its high-quality porcelain products and later became part of the Rosenthal Group, which rebuilt the Thomas brand as a leading porcelain manufacturer.

Thomas coffee service - a favourite classic for decades

The old coffee service series from Thomas porcelain have a long tradition and enjoy great popularity. Old coffee service series from the 60s and 70s in particular are sought-after collector's items today. They are characterised by their timeless designs and are the epitome of German porcelain history. A Thomas coffee service from an old series is not only a piece of nostalgia, but also brings a piece of porcelain history into the modern home as stylish vintage crockery.
