Cleaning & care tips: Porcelain

When cleaning your decorated porcelain, make sure you also pay attention to the label with the cleaning and care symbol, which you can also find on our online shop.

Cleaning & care symbols for porcelain

Dishwasher safe

White porcelain without any décor is generally dishwasher safe. With dishwasher safe décor the colours are melted into the glaze at 1000 degrees C. Here the glaze softens and the décor sinks into it, thus making colour and luminosity indestructible. It is scratch- and wear-resistant.

Dishwasher suitability

With this décor the colours are burnt onto the glaze at a mini-mum temperature of at least 750 degrees C. The use of robust colours achieves such a strong lesion with the glaze that the dishwasher is most unlikely to do any damage to the décor. Dishwasher tests in the Rosenthal GmbH Institute for material technology (IWT) have proved the excellent durability of the décor. The service can be washed in the dishwasher economy cycle (55 degrees C). Please pay particular attention to the instructions of the dishwasher and detergent manufacturers on the suitability of their products.

Microwave suitability

This porcelain can safely be used in the microwave.

Cutlery marks

Cutlery marks are caused by the mechanical abrasion of metal on the porcelain surface. As the materials move against each other, the softer material, in this case, the cutlery, wears down, leaving traces on the harder material, the porcelain glaze. Factors such as water hardness, salts, dishwasher temperature, and a high chromium content in cutlery can amplify this effect. On plates and platters, where food is cut with a knife, darker streaks on the glaze may appear after repeated use. However, the glaze itself remains undamaged. These cutlery marks are not a sign of inferior quality.

To minimize cutlery marks, we recommend always using sharp, professionally sharpened knives. This reduces pressure on the food and, therefore, potential cutlery marks. Avoid using abrasive or harsh cleaning agents to prevent damage to the glaze. When washing in the dishwasher, avoid using racks with damaged plastic coatings, as the exposed metal can transfer corrosion residues to porcelain and cutlery, thereby promoting cutlery marks.

We also recommend treating abrasion marks with a specialised porcelain cleaner, such as "Etolit" by the company Etol. While it is often not possible to completely remove cutlery abrasion, it can be significantly reduced by using such cleaning products. Alternatively, standard ceramic hob cleaners can also help to visibly diminish these marks.
